A note on terminology used on this page: BCC Supplies does not lend money. A BCC Supplies membership is a commercial installment contract, reported to the business credit bureaus as a business installment tradeline β some pages also describe this as an "installment loan" in a descriptive sense, not a cash loan from a lender. See how this is structured β
The Federal Reserve's Small Business Credit Survey found that 52% of employer firms that applied for new financing in 2025 were approved.4 That approval rate sits against a backdrop of 38% of employer firms applying for new financing during the same period, up from 37% in 2024.1 More owners are asking for credit, and roughly half of them are getting a yes.
Those two numbers together tell a specific story: demand is rising slightly, and approval is a coin flip. If you're on the fence about applying, a clean, established business credit file is the single biggest lever you control to move your own odds above that 52% average.
The same survey found that 57% of employer firms rated their financial condition as poor or fair in 2025, down slightly from 58% in 2024.5 That means a majority of employer firms are not describing themselves as financially healthy right now, even as more of them apply for financing.
This is exactly the environment where a lender's first move is to pull your business credit file rather than take your word for your finances. When self-reported financial condition is shaky across the board, bureau-verified tradeline history becomes the tiebreaker that separates an approval from a decline.
A business credit file with a track record of on-time reporting can outweigh a soft year of revenue or cash flow in the eyes of an underwriter β the file shows payment behavior over time, not just a snapshot.
The Bank Prime Loan Rate is 6.75% as of August 2026.3 The Fed's Discount Window Primary Credit Rate is 3.75% as of September 3, 2026.2 These two benchmarks set the floor for what banks charge businesses and what banks themselves pay to borrow, and they shape how carefully a lender scrutinizes a business credit file before saying yes.
When rates sit at these levels, lenders have less room to absorb risk on a marginal file. A thin or unverifiable credit history is a much easier reason to decline an application than it was when money was cheaper.
Underwriters weigh three things when they pull your business credit file: payment history on existing tradelines, the age and depth of the file, and whether the data lines up across bureaus. None of the 2025 survey figures measure your file directly, but they describe the pool of applicants you're competing against β a pool where 38% applied and only 52% of those got approved.14
A BCC Supplies membership is a commercial installment contract reported to the business credit bureaus as a business installment tradeline β it is not a cash loan, and BCC Supplies is not a lender. It's a structured way to add exactly the kind of on-time payment history underwriters are looking for when they're deciding between the roughly half of applicants who get approved and the half who don't.
Given that 57% of employer firms describe their financial condition as poor or fair,5 the smartest move before applying is to check what your business credit file actually shows, independent of how your finances feel. A file with steady tradeline history can put you ahead of the field even if your revenue picture is mixed this year.
Pull your reports from the major bureaus, confirm your tradelines are reporting accurately, and address any gaps before you submit a new application. Doing this homework first is what turns a 52% average approval odds into something closer to a sure thing for your specific file.

Building a business installment tradeline that reports on time, every time, is one of the most direct ways to strengthen the file lenders check before they approve or decline you.
See Your Options βBCC Supplies is not affiliated with the Federal Reserve or the Small Business Credit Survey; this article simply reads their published data to explain what it means for your business credit file. What BCC Supplies actually does is report a commercial installment contract to the business credit bureaus as a business installment tradeline, giving you a controllable way to build the payment history underwriters look for β never as a cash loan, and never through a lending relationship.
